JUDE HARZER FINE ART

When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”~ Paul Coelho

A young and vital child knows no limit to his own will, and it is the only reality to him. It is not that he wants at the outset to fight other wills, but that they simply do not exist for him. Like the artist, he goes forth to the work of creation, gloriously alone.

Teri and Zoe

Everyone has a story . As I continue to explore my two painted series,  "On Top of My Head" and "Child's Play" ,I am looking to individuals who have powerful personal tales of pain and persistence from their childhood as subject matter. I want to know how these experiences shaped their life, impacted their relationships and influenced who they are at this moment . Although I am not at liberty to fully divulge their stories, the women whom I select to paint have emerged from horrors that are difficult to fathom and yet they have emerged with hope ,passion and formidable strength.

The following are recent works all in process. Teri and her grand daughter Zoe inspire me on many levels .It is a story of a young girl's struggle to maintain her spirit, sanity and safety in the face of unspeakable abuses . It is the tale of her efforts to protect her children and grandchild from the same...a true love story.

Balloon Series: She Flies Alone

I continue to work on this series of paintings which will be featured in an upcoming exhibit. They are still in process and progress and I am loving creating them. As always, I have an abundance of other ideas but cherish these small works....all 12" x 12" because they are so near and dear to my heart. Although seemingly "dark", they are wonderfully uplifting to me on a personal level and mark a great transition in my work and my thought. I tend to be misunderstood but trust that they are works that celebrate growth, confidence and self discovery. I must put these aside to finish a more traditional and much larger portrait commission but there are certainly more balloons that will take flight. Stylized, sentimental, autobiographical? Yes, yes and yes!

The Child Within

Progress was made this evening:) As hard as I tried to put away my paints until after the holiday happenings, I simply could not. Painting has become like breathing, resting, thinking or eating....NECESSARY. It is strange how we think we should deny ourselves what it is we need and want most ,when in actuality we can do more, have more, be more and when we enrich and care for ourselves, it effects everything around us in a positive way.I can finally sleep tonight because I painted, uninterrupted. Painting gives me a sense of peace and solace like nothing else can.
"The Child Within" is slowly developing into a "finished" piece. Art is effort. Personally, it is not something created on a whim, in moments of pure emotional frenzy, (although people like to believe that of me).I  don't create extensive preliminary sketches and my process is fairly "immediate" and direct. I do dream, contemplate and envision my images. Most accomplished artists that I have met, motivated or not, "show up" regularly to engage in the process of creating. The times when it seems most difficult to summon energy or desire, are exactly the moments when I must work. The results are sometimes pleasantly unexpected and rich. I am persistent, patient and disciplined. And yes, sometimes a break is in order, but not now...not for me.
And my most satisfying works to date are my Wildflower paintings....."wildflowers...showing up where beauty has lost its way..."

My Studio

My studies for my "Field" paintings consume my mind and my "studio"(my dining room table:)I suppose the approaching holidays necessitate that I set aside my work and rediscover and unveil a clean table surface. The thought of that is sadder than anyone can imagine(except perhaps for fellow artists) but I remind myself that I share this space with my family. The new year promises new work...wildflowers, fields and figures.I love that I am an artist and that my inspiration is abundant.

"To imagine is everything, to know is nothing at all." ~A. France

This is an ongoing challenge: to clear my mind and clear my studio. That means I must complete paintings and projects in order to move forward. There are about 20 works in process. That is actually typical of how I work but I really don't want to dismiss these concepts. For me,they need time and care to evolve into worthwhile images. I haven't been giving enough time or care to much lately. Tonight I worked on these two recent paintings on wood panels.I enjoyed every moment.

It's Showtime! SVA Summer Residency Artist's Exhibit!

Well the day has arrived! I am on my way to move furniture, sweep my studio and take care of last minute touches! Teaching and motherhood have greatly influenced my time management skills so actually I have been "ready" for several days and have gotten to relax, walk and do a bit of shopping. There were no end of "semester" all nighters for this "mature" artist but I did enjoy watching my young colleagues bond and work with oneanother late into the evening/morning:)
I am confident in what I produced, what I accomplished and the lessons I have learned. Throughout the day, if time allows, I'll post the exhibit preparations and works of friends. If not, I'll be certain to provide images and other artist's links, after the show.
I'll see many familiar faces in NYC this evening! I am excited but have forewarned my serious artist friends to be kind in their criticisms:) I'm sure they will fill be in later as to their experience of my work at SVA. It's all good! Peace and love 617! :)
Tonight! School of Visual Arts...21st Street...NYC...6-9 pm....4th Floor. Hope to see you there!

Works In Process:A Return To Color

I met with an artist friend yesterday who has become an unexpected source of inspiration and somewhat of a professional "coach." It does help to bounce ideas off other artists who you value and trust and who know you personally. It helps if they can physically see your work as much gets lost in photographs,... mine anyway. Artists tend to work in isolation but occasionaly it helps me to input from a fellow artist. When my daughter left for college, I lost her critical eye. She helped me immensely when I couldn't find direction or when I was struggling with a composition. And she was tough and vocal in her critiques, which I greatly appreciated. I wasn't looking for flowery compliments, only assistance so that I could improve....Anyway, I am uncluttering my head and my discussion yesterday confirmed that I need to focus more than ever and "just do it." You have to love those Nike guys:) So right now I am rapidly transferring new ideas onto canvas. This is effective in documenting the general concepts so that I can later return to refine them.I actually have an abundance of images swirling in my mind, waiting to be manifested...but some of the older work still needs to be completed and there is value in further developing them. Here are some of the numerous images, hastily painted for the sake of peace of mind. So I'm off to a good start for 2009, I actually have a plan and deadlines in January for projects, one of which I vowed to fulfill based on a handshake:)It is my integrity that is on the line, personally and artistically. Yikes! No more procrastination...

Regatta Encaustic48 in x 60 in

Jim Inzero
After many layers of wax brushstrokes, I step back and objectively look at the composition from all directions to see what the painting expresses to me. I look to see a physical response in my work, especially a desire to reach out and touch the painting. It is my intention for you to have a sensory and a visual experience with this work.

Recognizing Possibilities oil on canvas

Jude Harzer
My work is about the preservation of one's "spirit" and dreams. I paint primarily with oils and have recently begun to explore the technique of collage, using an array of patterns and colors, in a quilt like motif, to achieve rich texture and a "loose" visual narrative. My objective is to layer, juxtapose and ‘stitch’ together seemingly unrelated materials and images in an effort to create a single interesting composition. In many ways the process reminds me of one’s life: diverse experiences and meaningful "moments", pieced together to create the distinctive fabric of a person’s existence.
